General Tips |

- Enter information in at least one field, and adjust the Creation Date or fill in the Publishing Date. Otherwise, your search will be defaulted for photos taken during last six months only.
- You can view 150 images at most for each search.
- Every image has a Photo Number, Creation Date, Caption, Byline (name of photographer), and Image Size (in pixels). If the picture has been published, you can find its Publishing Date as well.
- Only SCMP-copyrighted photos are searchable.
- No cartoons or graphics are available.
- Search terms in upper case and lower case bring the same search results.
- Keywords with or without hyphens lead to the same search results, e.g. "ice-cream" or "ice cream"; "Tung Chee-hwa" or "Tung Chee Hwa", etc.
- Keywords in singular and plural forms will be searched but may bring different search results, e.g. "foot" and "feet", etc.
- Any misspellings will lead to a search failure.

B. Search Criteria
- By Keyword
- Search with a proper name
- Names of individuals, buildings, organisations and commercial firms, etc.
- E.g. Tung Chee-hwa, Kerry Group, South China Morning Post, etc.
- Search with a keyword or a phrase
- E.g. Pollution, Dragon Boat Festival, etc.
- The "And" function
- Search images with more than one keyword or phrase.
- E.g. Fire "And" Investigation
(Search results are the images with both "fire" and "investigation" in their captions.)
- The "Or" function
- Search images with any of the given keywords or phrases.
- E.g. ICAC "Or" Corruption
(Search results are the images with either "ICAC" or "corruption", or both, in their captions.)
- By Photo Number
- All photos have a unique number. Type in the number for a search. (Not necessary to adjust the Creation Date or Publishing Date when using this criterion.)
- There are two sets of photo numbers.
- Photos with a seven-digit number (e.g. 1144545): mostly taken since 1993
- Photos with an alphabet followed by a five-digit number (e.g. A13257): most of them were historical photos taken before the 90s.
- By City
- Enter the name of the city or province for a search, e.g. Guangzhou.
- By Country
- Type "Hong Kong" in the Country field (or just leave the field blank) if you seek Hong Kong pictures taken before the 1997 handover; type in "China" for local pictures after the handover.
- By Publishing Date
- If you want to search a photo published in a particular issue, just enter the publishing date (DD/MM/YYYY) with a keyword.
- By Creation Date
- We have two implications behind the Creation Date.
- Picture-taken date: mainly for pictures taken since 2001.
- Picture-uploading date: mainly for pictures taken before 2001, which were uploaded to our current internal databank from our previous archiving system on the specified date. We are planning to modify these uploading dates to their shooting dates.
- For pictures taken on an unclear date, we enter the Creation Date in the following patterns:
- "01.01.1970" - for images shot in the 1970s, in 1970, in Jan 1970, or on 1 Jan 1970
- "01.01.1975" - for images shot in 1975, in Jan 1975, or on 1 Jan 1975
- "01.02.1977" - for images shot in Feb 1977, or on 1 Feb 1977
- "01.01.1900" - for undated historical pictures
- You may limit the search pool either by selecting the appropriate search range on the pull-down menu ("Last month's photos", "Last 2 months' photos, "Last 6 months' photos", and "Last year's photos"), or by entering a specific date range (DD/MM/YYYY), e.g. From "01/01/2000" to "31/08/2004".
